ACT was established in 1989 to manufacture the extreme abrasion resistant material ACTCHEM 90 developed by C&H LABORATORIES CC for SASOL for use in the SYNTHOL plant at SECUNDA. Over 800 tonnes were supplied in the initial replacement of RESCO AA22S.
In order to be able to respond to urgent orders for ACTCHEM, ACT began to manufacture other specialized products so that the factory would be in continuous operation. Production ranges between 100 and 300 tonnes per month depending on demand and manufacture involves intensive Quality Assurance procedures.
Every batch is tested by Cannon & Hancock CC by casting samples and drying at 110 Degrees Celsius to determine bulk density and cold crushing strength. Test Certificates are issued for every batch.Firing test are also conducted when fired data is part of the purchase specification as for example Permanent Linear Change and ASTM Abrasion tests.
A batch size is typically 5 tonnes for dense products and 2 tonnes for insulation products but even orders below 1 tonne are individually tested and the costs of the Quality Assurance is included in the price of each product.
